Description

This lineart is for those given permission to color an Imperial Lasarian

Note, this is a young imperial, for older imperials have much longer and silkier coats.

A Note On Lasarians For Those Who Don't Know

Anyone can make a common Lasarian:

Only close friends can make Imperial or Elemental Lasarians. <33
Lazeros is Half Imperial, but ridiculed and exiled for having wings, something considered disgusting by most Lasarians. Lazeros is also a RARE elemental. Elementals are born once in a thousand to one hundred thousand or more years, and most never learn how to use their element within their lifetime. It defines their colorations to a point regardless of whether or not they learn how to call upon the power. Rarely, an imperial can learn to control this great gift with help and guidance from the elder story teller.

NOTE - this isn't Laz herself, this is her species. This is currently what the description in my book is like. Laz was born with wings, and therefor ridiculed for it. Also, she was not born with customary tribal designs, she was born with stripes. Lasarians come in a vast array of colors and tribal patterns. Stripes are very rare, as are solid colors.

Lasarians are born without or with very little fur, live, under water. In the first few weeks, they develop lungs and can start coming to the surface. In that time, their pattern will start to develop. Most pups who do not develop patterns are left to die... A proud Lasarian will boast the brightest of colors.

Once their patterns have come in, and they have learned to spend most of their time at the water's surface, they can attempt coming on land. This process can take up to a year for some, and only weeks for the strongest and largest.

While on Land, the thin membrane on their fins will rip, tear, and eventually disappear completely over time, leaving only the dominant fins that the membrane was once attached to. Imperials can be spotted at a very early age due to the length of their dominant fins. The elegance and grace of the imperials is often learned as they are readily taught and accepted by the elders as their own. Few imperials have been born with short fins, but they make up for it with an extremely healthy and silky coat.

They start to grow in their silky fur within the first five months, but a full coat can take up to three years for some. Imperials boast quick growing silky fur at early ages.

The first hundred years or more of a lasarian's life is spent either on land or in water, as flight takes hundreds of years for a Lasarian to learn. They nest on shore and hunt under water. Lasarians are not good land hunters, they are just not built for high land speeds. Their large heavy double ribcaged chests make walking on land very awkward. Only the Elders have mastered the grace of land walking due to their flight capabilities.

The coat of a Lasarian is vital to their survival. Lasarians can and will spend much of their time grooming themselves or one another in order to keep their manes and coats void of knots or matts. During the summer, their flowing coats are light and block their sensitive skin from sunburn. It's flowing qualities also keep them cool during the hottest of days. In winter, or in arctic territories, their coats gain lenth and thickness, allowing them to dive comfortably in the icy waters or lay comfortably in the snow. A Lasarian must be at least 5 years of age to make their first arctic migration.

Flight does not come easily to a Lasarian dragon. Many die before they ever learn. Flight can take hundreds of years depending on the individual. First, they must learn to control the fluids within their bodies. Once maximum control is obtained, they must seek out and eat certain rocks. Once ingested, they learn to use their control of fluids in order to move the rock fragments through their systems. It will take many years to seporate all the metals from the stone, and keep from passing it. Once they have built enough metals, they control the flow of the fluid that carries it in order to create magnetism. Once one has enough control over this, it is possible to use the inner magnetism in order to push and pull itself magnetically off of the metals found within the earth. Flight over large magnets can, and will cause them to crash or die, so caution must be used. When not in flight, they must be able to disperse the metals. Inability to disperse the metals can result in a Lasarian being stuck to the ground perminently, or to starve in flight. Beginners can count on the ability of an elder to disperse the metals if one of this problems should occur.

Elders have been known to be ageless. Their fur touches the ground, their long fins boast silky strands on some. Though a Lasarian can be killed, their bodies do not deteriorate. Elders are the only Lasarians permitted to go near humans, for they are wise and have mastered the ability of concealment.

Imperials are set apart by their long, silky coats, and ornamental fins. Some have even been known to still maintain the thin membrane between the fins from their aquatic stage in life. This is achieved by the highest of care by the caretakers.

While still pups, Imperial Lasarians boast brighter colors and more in depth tribal markings, some of the greatest Imperials had even been born elemental, a true and precious rarity.

As pups, they are always first to be fed, and constantly doted upon, thus allowing them to quickly grow and develop the silky coat they require to attain their Imperial position.

If by chance they do not fully develop the silky coat or long fins, color and at least one other quality can guarantee a position in the Imperial guard. Imperial guards, though not doted upon, play a very important role of keeping the Imperials safe and out of harm. A very prestigious position in Lasarian class society.

Imperials, though stunning and lovely, have a tenancy to be born ill due to the mass influx of inbreeding. Once declared an Imperial, mating with a non Imperial class is taboo. Though unrecorded, most know it still occurs.

When an Imperial is born to a low class family, such as a hunting class or lower, the offspring will be separated from its family indefinitely. A good example of this would be SarisoPhin, Head Imperial Priestess born Earth Elemental.

Her family had bore no great color or marks, forced to live on the outskirts of the island, and to hunt alone. Their relation to Elementals were so far back in their bloodline that they were nearly void of color. But when their offspring had come ashore for the first time, they saw her presented by the caretakers as a true elemental. And though it was hard to let her go, they knew she would live a better life, and in turn continue their bloodline.

Sarisophin, like many others, will never be allowed to see her lower class family. She will be adopted by the Imperials for the rest of her life, heavily watched by the Imperial guards.

Also, since someone asked, here are more answers about the species for those interested <33

I love to answer questions, because there are sooo many facts that I have written for them, and have yet to upload XD.

1.) Lasarians ears are similar to that of a llama's ears. They can rotate almost 360 degrees in order to listen for large predators. Lasarians, though rather large (large horse in size) are still susceptible to attack due to their inability to move quickly on land. A major predator example would be Polar bears and arctic Norians (old ref: [link] ) The fins attached to the ear pull it back tightly, closing it off from filling with water during deep dives. From there, communication is made by sonar, much like that of the Orca or Dolphin, some of their greatest threats during a dive.

2.) Lasarians have vision similar to ours, yet they have a broader range of color. They don't make for good land hunters due to that vision, but they make up for it with their sonar in the water. Lasarians born blind can still lead full and rich lives, though they are normally classed as Caretakers of the Lasarian pups. When diving, a protective membrane much like an eyelid, only opaque, will cover and protect the eye. This also means that Lasarians that take heavy damage to their snouts can lose their ability to dive and use the Sonar properly.

3.) Once a typical lasarian has mastered flight, as long as they are classed below Imperial Guards, they are deemed to be hunters. Hunters are charged with locating Orca in organized hunting parties. Whale and other sea faring creatures are their mainstay. Unfortunately, this is a very dangerous job, and many Lasarians are killed on the hunt. Many lower class Lunar Lasarians are charged with hunting parties. Their large tail fins are quite stiff, unlike the rest, and are used to propel them under water. Their toes and hands are also webbed.

During the major whale migrations, however, it is far too dangerous to find prey in the sea. This is when Lasarian delicacies come into play. Land mammal is a rare treat for Lasarians, since they are not well adapted to walking and stalking on land with their massive size and weight. Usually only the best fliers have the treat of consuming these rich foods, and they are normally elders alone.

But during the main whale migration, the upper class of hunters (which are the best in flight) are charged with the task of hunting land mammals and bringing them back for the upper classes, just as the Ocean hunters do on a normal basis. Most land hunters are Solar born instead of Lunar.

The lowest of the classes, those below Ocean hunting, are not cared for by normal Lasarian society, and must therefor gather their own food. Unfortunately for them, it is too dangerous to hunt Orca or other large prey, so they must instead stick to the fish of the shallows. And sadly since they require a lot of food, this leaves the Lasarians of the outer island looking rather thin and sickly. But at the same time, they are used to distract land predators from hunting and/or consuming the healthy and more colorful end of society.

Rarely, some colorless/dull colored lasarians have been known to become quite strong, organizing their own hunting parties of colorless society. The outer groups of them are known to the regular society as Ziluahn Lasarians. They are truly a force to be reckoned with. Ziluahn can be faded in color to pure black and white. But survival of the Ocean without the help of the caretakers has made them the spartans of Lasair, lol. (in other words, only the very strongest survived their aquatic stages in early life due to being ignored and unprotected by the Caretakers.)

Whispers speak of the strongest of the Ziluahn actually raising it's own young in a secret cove off the southern coast. Though it isn't proven, many fear that they will rise in numbers and take the island by force.

4.) Most of the time, females have lighter colors, while males boast more saturated colors, but this is not definite. Any Lasarian within 8 generations of the elemental born in their bloodline will still boast beautiful saturated color.

If you read through all that, Kudos! stick a # sign in your comment so I'll know ^^

Why do I ask you guys stick those in your comments?? Because many people have been asking me questions about the species that can be easily answered if they had just read the description XD. So therefor, if they ask a question, and also put in the symbol, I am inclined to answer them quickly ^^

New Answers:

1.) Lasarians are purely aquatic at birth. Hairless and finned like that of a fish, their gills stretching down their necks. Within about 2-5 months, their lungs develop and they surface regularly at the urge of the caretakers.

Any Lasarian born without proper markings, fins, or color has a lower chance of survival dependent on the severity. short fins will be looked after, but not treated well; long fins, no sign of coat growth will be treated the same; short/irregular/torn fins, no color, abnormalities such as wing buds, and abnormally sick offspring will be chased off the shallows by the Caretakers and completely ignored. Most will die, thus leaving only the preferred Lasarians to survive and breed again.

Once they have began breathing through their lungs, the gills begin to close and they become unable to breath through them any longer.

At this stage, depending on their development and caretaking, they may be strong enough to venture out of the water and onto land. This is a very difficult task since their muscles must be able to support their great weight outside of the water.

After enough ventures, they are capable of entering the "Right of Passage." A Lasarian tradition held very highly and enforced strictly.

The Right of passage depends on many things, and is also where they will be given their life's rank. Many things are considered before the offspring are ranked, these include:

Heritage - A Lasarian born to an Imperial will be given a higher rank than they deserve if they are born without Imperial qualities.

Physical Appearance - Main fin length, muscle build, long or very silky fur vs short or wiry fur.

Color - The brighter the colors, the closer a Lasarian is to an Elemental. Elementals are not only Imperial to Lasarians, they are slightly held above that. They are almost like the caged birds of Lasair, unable to do anything on their own for fear that harm will come to them. Though elementals may wish to be even of the lowest class, they will always be kept on a pedestal for all to gaze upon and forbidden to choose their own mate. Only the most colorful of the opposite sex may court an elemental, and they must be chosen by the Elders.

Sometimes bright vivid color can guarantee a short finned Lasarian a place in the imperial guard. Color is regarded highly amid Lasarians.

Element - Elementals can be picked out at an early age, usually within the first year due to their amazing color and finwork. Though some lucky Lasarians have been honored as elementals, it is very difficult to be sure since most elementals never have the ability to call upon their own power.

After that, they are ranked. Any surviving misfits are sent to the outskirts of the island where some become Ziluahn.

During 4 years, they must spend their time with a Lasarian storyteller, where they learn the ways of their kind. They are normally age 5 once they have completed the right of passage and received their ranking class amid society.

At age 30-54, they are considered teenagers, still learning the ways of their ranking class, still not fully grown. This is also when they hit puberty, if you will. Males will need to learn mating rituals, as well as females learn the ways of offspring.

The age of 55 is when an older teen may become an apprentice for his/her rank. This may take 30 or more years to achieve though. In hunting For example, Only one apprentice is taken for every Hunting pack. And this is only when one of the previous hunters has met his end. Then the apprentice shall start in the pack at rank zero, working his/her way up as other ranks meet their end.

Apprenticeship lasts until he/she has made second in command of the hunting party. Once this is achieved, they will take 3rd in command of every other hunting party and move them under the new leader. This allows for more hunting packs as the population increases.

Age 200-250 brings a tough challenge, flight training. This will be taught for as log as it takes for the young to learn the basics. Once they have gotten off the ground for the first time, they are on their own to perfect their flight.

Age 500 declares them a young adult regardless of whether or not they can fly.

Age 700-900 is considered adult so long as they have reached full size.

No one truly knows when a Lasarian becomes an Elder, but it was once whispered that the youngest was 6,000 years old. This is truly a matter of wisdom as well as age. The trial of the elders is a closely guarded secret. Roomers tell of great tests of Wisdom, Honor, and Courage have killed most, and that is why so very few exist.

2.) When hunting, lower class must fish as any typical sea creature, one fish at a time from the shallows by mouth. Veering off the shallows could cost a single Lasarian its life.

Hunter class are highly skilled and highly trained killers. Many years of trial and error have helped them to pass down strategy for quick and decisive attacks upon whales. Most of the time, this requires them to come from below their prey, as they can take higher pressure depths than most sealife. From beneath, the highest rank will watch, then pick the weakest animal. From there, he will launch an attack by head butting the whale of choice. This will stun it for a moment as the others quickly turn or scatter. It is during this crucial moment that the rest must come in and separate it from the rest of its pod. Once separated, each hunting party has their own unique way of taking down their prey which has been passed down to them from their own masters. Some grab and take flight from the water with it, some beat it until it can no longer fight or survive, and many others have hundreds of methods. But one thing is always common, each hunting party has their ways, and each once utilizes every member.

3.) I think two may have answered that, but in further detail, depending on the will and skill levels of a young Lasarian, they may be Apprenticed as young as 25 years of age. The weaker they are, the longer it takes to be chosen.

4.) Of course you can, I would love to see it ^^

5.) Lunars are born on the high tide, and during the hours of 6pm to6am. True Lunars are born on the new moon, also considered the Lunar cusp. A Lasarian born on the Lunar cusp has the abilities of the lunar, and the darker colors associated with it. But on the full moon, they gain more power than their kin, for they gain power with each rise of the moon. And unlike their kin, they do not need to rest on the new moon.

Solars are the complete opposite in time, and a true Solar is born on the Solar Eclipse. Solars are generally lighter in color, many boasting oranges and reds.

Of the elementals, there are the five Elements and the Origin. Legend states that all five of the normal elements were created by a Lasarian known as the Origin. The five major elements are:

Water, directional north- an element strongest in winter, and best trained during winter months. The sole control over fire.

Metal, directional West- an element strongest in autumn, and sole controller of wood.

Earth, directional Center - An element that draws upon all of its kin, and a great supporter of creation. This element is prized, though normally weak. It's main control is over water.

Wood, directional East - an element best trained during spring, sole controller of earth and prized for its unique ability to seamlessly merge with earth elementals.

And Fire, directional South - Best trained in the summer months, this is an easy element to learn, and the most common amid Lasarians. Unfortunately, it is not prized for its destructive nature, though it is held high, as it is a gift from the Origin. It is the sole controller of metal.

Then, there is the true rarity... The Origin... Legend says the origin flew in with the midnight breeze, a sound soul at one with its element, the giver of life, the air we breath. No one had ever known a true wind elemental since the Origin. But many say that Nightwish had been blessed with its unique gift.

It's a bit of a shame that only certain people are allowed to create Imperials, but I understand your reasonings. (Don't want thousands of them running around!) The design for the species is absolutely stunning, and the different forms are beautiful too! Very detailed. :D I'm definitely going to have to give the basic Lasarian a try: once I come up with a unique character, design and history of my own for her! I'll be sure to send you the link when I'm done. Thank you for sharing!
